(Try out this tag to my portfolio)Ive been spending time with Photographer Atton Conrad over the past couple of days, helping out with marketing and studio based admin. Although this doesn't sound like much, it was a great opportunity to see the day to day running of a professional studio, as well as get up to speed on the latest marketing techniques.
One of the things I discovered while on my trawl through the internet many ad agencies and fashion websites was Microsoft Tags. These beauties allow you to create a custom made bar code assembled from colorful CMYK triangles that can operate as a link to a range of rich content via mobile phone. You simply sign into MSN,( or create an account) tell the tag what you would like it to represent, such as an electronic business card, hyper link to your website or prompt a text message with further content. The tag is then rendered and made available to you as a image file or pdf which you can do what you want with. Place it on business cards, wall stickers, websites etc...
To read the tag all you have to do is download a simple application available for camera phones via this web address: http://gettag.mobi
Boot it up and point your phones camera at the tag. It instantaneously loads the relevant information. No more laboriously typing in contact details or web addresses, jut point, load and bookmark.
I think this visual tag is a great idea and see plenty of viral marketing potential for the technology. I will be integrating this technology into my website and promotional material soon. and being a colorful geometric pattern its not quite as ugly on the eye as a conventional bar code, perfect for a creative industry such as photography.
