As the title of this posts suggests, I have returned from New York after an incredibly busy week of meetings, interviews, talks, portfolio reviews and galleries visits, not to mention lavish helpings of American size food and tiny confusing 3/4 pints of Boston ale. Without boring you with all the nitty gritty details here are a couple of things that I took away from the experience:
New Yorkers are incredibly friendly, generous, self-confident folk. I have never met so many people in any city willing to meet and help out an absolute stranger or just have a chat.
I shall be concentrating on my portraiture from now on. Having shown my book to a dozen people over the course of the week from a broad spectrum of industry positions, including photographers, producers and stock agencies, I had one overwhelming response; we like your portraits, not so much the fashion. This was exactly what I needed to hear, and was worth the cost of the trip alone.
Erwin Olaf is an intimidatingly good photographer. Check out his exhibition at the Hasted Hunt Kraeutler Gallery if you get the chance, or take a look at his online portfolio HERE.
Platon is still one of my all time photographic heroes, and a fantastic public speaker to boot, It was great to talk to someone with so much optimism for the future of photography.
Good photography is all about great ideas, case in point Mr. Toledano.
13 inches of snow and casual shoes makes for wet, cold, soggy feet.
Some people have no natural sense of direction, despite otherwise being quite intelligent.
