In the studio: Digital Polariods

Today was my first day behind the camera in the studios. Here are a couple of digital Polaroids from todays lighting workshop, the first shot was inspired by an idea for lighting a still life image of a rim lit glass bottle. By simply increasing the size of the light source and flagging a full body soft rim light was achieved.











Flare was a problem however, hence the use of so many gobos (flags) ,for the final shots with the Hasselblad we used a barn doors light modifier attachment in front of the lens as a giant lens hood to reduce flare as much as possible. The lighting diagram explains the set up:

For the second shot we created a corridor of soft light by taking two soft boxes and stacking them one atop the other, the then directed the soft light with two large gobos (or flags). This created a soft shaft of full body light, perfect for a full body portrait.













By moving the right hand gobo left and right it was possible to control the amount of light spill onto the background (grey) and thus control the gradient of tone in vertical shadow.








This afternoons session went well, i think that the flare present in the first image needs to be addressed more by moving the front two black flags close, let me know what you think.
